Lyman Whitaker has been a sculptor for more than fifty years. He studied at the University of Utah under renowned sculptors Avard Fairbanks and Angelo Caravaglia, where he learned both classical sculpture techniques and contemporary design principles. For over three decades, Lyman has focused on the creation of Wind Sculptures—kinetic works of art that respond directly to the ever-changing currents of the wind. Each sculpture is handcrafted with exceptional mechanical integrity, allowing it to move gracefully while maintaining long-term durability. His work is widely recognized for its balance of engineering precision and artistic expression. Living in the dramatic desert landscape of southern Utah, Lyman draws deep inspiration from the natural forces that surround him. Fascinated by wind and weather since childhood, his growing awareness of climate and environmental systems has subtly shaped the evolution of his forms. His sculptures carry an organic, meditative presence, with undulating movement that reflects both the gentle and powerful qualities of wind. Lyman is internationally known as a master in the field of kinetic sculpture. His work is represented by fine art galleries throughout the United States and abroad, and his collectors can be found around the world. His sculptures are installed in museums, public spaces, coastal settings, urban environments, and private gardens—testament to their wide appeal and timeless resonance. Beyond his studio practice, Lyman has been an advocate for environmental responsibility. Alongside his family, he played a role in efforts to halt the development of a coal-fired power plant near his home, which was ultimately redirected toward solar and natural gas alternatives. In 2008, he ran for the Utah State House of Representatives, seeking to give a broader voice to his ecological concerns. Lyman lives and works with his wife Stacy and their family in southern Utah, where their collaborative studio continues to thrive with creativity and innovation. While his activism has taken many forms, perhaps the most powerful expression of his vision remains the quiet, moving voice of his art. Shapes and formsFrom natureAttached with metal to the windGiving it a voiceThe wind’s currents, soft and violentLet me know change is in the air— Lyman Whitaker
