Based in the northwest of England, Manchester-born Malcolm Taylor is an established artist with a distinguished exhibition history across the British Isles. His works have been showcased at prestigious venues including The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Mall Galleries, reaching audiences from Plymouth to Glasgow. Taylor's artistic inspiration is diverse, drawing significantly from his extensive travels throughout the UK, with a particular affinity for the landscapes of St. Ives in Cornwall. A key element of his practice involves an ongoing exploration of the varying moods of the landscape, observing how these initial impressions can evolve and ultimately culminate in fully abstract compositions. However, Taylor's creative spirit resists confinement to a single medium. He fluidly transitions between acrylics, traditional oils, and both soft and oil pastels, selecting the material that best serves his artistic intent. In his purely abstract paintings, Taylor embraces a process-driven approach, allowing the imagery to emerge and develop organically rather than adhering to a preconceived vision. His techniques are tactile and expressive, employing brushes, sticks, fingers, and thumbs to scrape, score, and scratch marks onto the canvas surface. Through continuous redrawing, rearrangement, and even obliteration of sections, he strives to achieve a compelling equilibrium of colour and form. The final outcome is paramount, and he readily incorporates collage, mixed media, dripping, scraping, and drawing with sticks – any method that contributes to a spontaneous yet harmonious painting in terms of composition, tone, and colour. A significant recognition of his artistic standing came in 2019 with his election as a member of The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), an esteemed art body founded in 1823 as an alternative to the Royal Academy. Further underscoring his commitment to the artistic community in his home city of Manchester, Taylor was also appointed President of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts in 2019.
