Marcel Barbeau was born in rue Saint-Hubert, Montreal, Quebec in 1925. Studying with Paul-Emile Bordas and Jean-Paul Riopelle at the Ecole du Meuble, together they formed a group titling themselves "The Automatistes". Barbeau was a painter and a sculptor who addressed many fields within the arts. He leaned into becoming a multidisciplinary artist between 1985-1992, and he often researched contemporary trends to renew his art.
