Margaret Roleke (b. United States) is a Connecticut-based artist whose mixed-media installations, sculptures, and wall works transform the detritus of consumer culture into pointed investigations of American identity, violence, and excess. Working with everyday materials—plastic toys, candy wrappers, bullets, packaging, and mass-produced objects—Roleke constructs visually seductive yet conceptually confrontational works that expose the contradictions embedded in contemporary life. Roleke's practice is driven by accumulation and appropriation. She gathers materials that circulate through consumer culture—objects designed for pleasure, convenience, or function—and reconfigures them into dense, repetitive compositions that destabilize their original meanings. Bright plastic toys become markers of gendered conditioning; discarded packaging transforms into commentary on environmental degradation; bullets and ammunition are repurposed to address gun violence and complicity. Her work operates through juxtaposition and irony, merging visual appeal with unsettling critique. Each piece functions as both spectacle and provocation. Roleke's installations invite close observation, rewarding viewers with intricate detail and pattern, while simultaneously confronting them with uncomfortable truths about consumption, waste, and systemic violence. Her use of humor and beauty serves not to soften her message but to draw viewers in, making the work both accessible and uncompromising. Roleke has exhibited nationally and internationally, with work presented at SPRING/BREAK Art Show, New York; Real Art Ways, Hartford, Connecticut; and numerous galleries and alternative spaces. Her work is held in private and public collections and has been supported through multiple residencies and awards. Beyond her studio practice, Roleke is an active curator and advocate for arts education and community engagement, fostering dialogue around art's capacity to address urgent social and political questions. She holds an MFA from Long Island University, CW Post. Roleke lives and works in Connecticut.
