Margaret Joyce Van Duine works in the classical tradition of verre églomisé, an ancient technique of reverse painting on glass. Beginning with clear glass as her canvas, she hand paints each piece on the back surface, building imagery in layers that interact beautifully with light. The paints she uses are non-toxic, and all bowls and platters are heat-set, food safe, and intended to be hand washed. Her two-dimensional glass works offer a luminous addition to both home décor and art collections. Each piece is hand painted, resulting in a one-of-a-kind original work of art. Drawing inspiration from her everyday surroundings as well as travels both near and far, her imagery reflects a quiet attentiveness to place, color, and atmosphere. More recently, she has expanded her practice to include mixed-media canvases and welded metal works. Born in Yorkshire, England, Margaret immigrated to the United States in 1980 and now lives and works here, balancing her studio practice with family life. While she goes by Margaret, she signs each piece with her middle name, Joyce, in memory of her late mother.
