A native of California, Michael Carpenter was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, where he demonstrated an early gift for drawing throughout his youth. While attending high school, he was fortunate to study under a highly supportive and dedicated art teacher who encouraged a broad understanding of the creative process and helped make a career in art feel both possible and attainable. At the conclusion of his senior year, Carpenter was awarded a summer scholarship to the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where he focused on drawing and painting. In the fall of 1962, Carpenter chose to fulfill his military obligation by joining the U.S. Navy. After completing his service, he took advantage of the GI Bill to continue his art education. He attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, majoring in visual arts for two years, before studying illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. There, he trained under respected artists including Dan McCaw, Bill Robles, and Don Putnam. This professional training led to a successful career in illustration and graphic design. Carpenter spent over twenty years working in Portland, Oregon, collaborating with clients such as Nike, Hickory Farms, Pacific Power, Tillamook Cheese, Kettle Chips, Oregon Tourism, and Bonneville Power Administration. Eventually, Carpenter was able to pursue his lifelong passion for fine art oil painting. He traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Northern California to attend workshops focused on landscape and figurative painting, studying with artists such as Doug Higgins, Ron Rencher, and Kevin Macpherson. These experiences deepened his technical skill and expanded his appreciation for the discipline and challenge of fine art painting. Michael Carpenter has been a member of the Oil Painters of America since 1994 and has attained Signature Member status. His past affiliations include the California Art Club and the New Mexico Art League. His paintings feature subjects and locations throughout Santa Fe, Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, and his work has been represented in all four regions. Now residing in Oregon, Carpenter continues to paint with gratitude for a lifelong vocation as an artist, finding fulfillment in creating representational work that brings inspiration and lasting enjoyment to collectors and viewers alike.
