Mitchel J. Greenspan is a contemporary painter based in Oceanside, NY. His artistic practice is based in an extensive and multi-faceted creative background. Mitchel established his earliest creative work as a professional miniature set model maker and designer, specialized in stop motion animation and special effects for film. He then transitioned to the realms of music and audio as Executive Vice President of Sales for a voice-over and music recording studio in New York City. This experience working with major advertising agencies and TV and radio broadcast networks proved foundational for Mitchel’s directing and producing skills. Subsequently, he embarked on the journey of starting his own company, producing and publishing music for TV and radio commercials and broadcast programs, winning a Regional Emmy in 2014 for music consulting and providing the background music for the documentary “The Typist.” Evolving from business ownership, Mitchel now focuses his creative efforts on a painting practice he describes as “Impressionistic Surrealism.” He describes this style as an amalgam of influences, centered in commonplace experiences and objects, subjected to an “uncomfortable environment” or “unexpected context.” Mitchel’s process begins with a familiar motif and evolves intuitively, embracing the unanticipated and chance encounters between material and gesture. His “Crazy Eyes” series are hence not only spirited and joyful confluences form, color, and pattern, but metaphors for a more broadly imagined aesthetic experience. Inspired by the author Kobi Yamada, Mitchel prescribes to his statement, “Sometimes you just have to take the leap, and build your wings on the way down.”
