Mr. (Masakatsu Iwamoto, born 1969, Japan) is a contemporary Japanese artist closely associated with Takashi Murakami and the Superflat art movement. A protégé of Murakami, Mr. graduated from the Sokei Art School in Tokyo in 1996. His work, which spans painting, sculpture, and installation, is characterized by its deep engagement with otaku culture—the Japanese subculture centered on anime, manga, and video games.Mr.'s art often features wide-eyed, youthful, and sometimes overtly sexualized anime-style characters, particularly young girls, rendered in a style that blends "kawaii" (cuteness) with darker, more complex undercurrents. His compositions are frequently vibrant, chaotic, and multi-layered, incorporating elements of pop culture, consumerism, and sometimes a critique of contemporary Japanese society. After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, his work also began to explore themes of destruction and resilience, sometimes incorporating found objects and a grittier aesthetic into his established style. Mr. has exhibited internationally in numerous galleries and museums.
