Nelleke Beltjens (b. 1974, the Netherlands) is a sculptor whose practice operates across installation, object-making, and site-responsive intervention. Working with diverse materials and processes, Beltjens constructs works that investigate spatial relationships, material transformation, and the intersections between natural and constructed environments. Her practice is characterized by formal experimentation, attentiveness to place, and a sustained engagement with sculpture's capacity to activate and reframe space. Beltjens's approach is informed by her nomadic working method. She maintains a flexible, geographically mobile practice, moving between residencies, studios, and exhibition contexts. This mobility functions not as disruption but as generative condition—each site, material encounter, and cultural context shapes the work's development. Her sculptures emerge from sustained observation and material investigation, often responding to the specificities of their environments while maintaining conceptual and formal coherence across varied contexts. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle, Belgium; Museum Villa Zanders, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany; Ludwig Museum Koblenz, Germany; and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Thailand. She has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States and is represented by Gallery r8m, Cologne, Germany. Beltjens has completed residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, California; MacDowell, Peterborough, New Hampshire; CCA Andratx, Mallorca, Spain; Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York; and Vashon Artist Residency, Washington. She has received two Basisstipendium grants from the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst, Amsterdam, and a Mondrian Fund grant in support of her exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. From 2007 to 2011, Beltjens served as Assistant Professor and Head of Sculpture at Montana State University, Bozeman. She holds an MA in Sculpture from Northern Illinois University and an MFA in Art Studio from the University of California, Davis. Beltjens continues to maintain a flexible, nomadic practice, embracing mobility as a vital catalyst for her creative process.
