After completing her degree at Edinburgh University, Nicola Stratton Tyler spent more than twenty years as a Fine Art valuer. While she continues to work as an art writer and curator, today painting is her principal focus. Nicola is largely inspired by the natural world and the transience of light in both landscape and still life. She is particularly drawn to the landscapes and seascapes of East Anglia, Scotland and North Cornwall. In her still life work, she revels in the medium itself, using visible brushstrokes and placing an emphasis on negative spaces. Painting largely in oil and drawing in oil pastel, her style has been described as "contemporary impressionism". Having studied and practised fine art for many years, Nicola exhibits regularly at notable exhibitions and societies in London and elsewhere, including the RWA, ING Discerning Eye, the SWA and the Chelsea Art Society. She has been shortlisted for several art prizes and was awarded runner-up in The Circles of Art Artist of the Year 2022. Nicola was elected an associate member of the Society of Women Artists (SWA) in 2024, and a full member in 2025. Her work is held in public institutions (including the National Trust) and many private collections, nationally and internationally.
