About the Artist: Nancy Tuttle May’s paintings are in private and corporate collections worldwide. A Wake Forest University graduate, she has studied at the Università per Strainieri di Perugia, Italy, and Université Canadienne en France in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, and participated in masterclass workshops with Ed Betts, University of Illinois and Sas Colby in Taos, New Mexico. A National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, she was also awarded a four-year Visiting Artist Residency: a cooperative program with the North Carolina Arts Council and the Department of Community Colleges. Her work has been described as Colorfield/Abstract Expressionism. Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko, and Richard Diebenkorn have been major influences. With a strong community commitment, she has served on the boards of Duke University’s Library, Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art, and the Durham Art Guild. Tuttle May is chair of the Durham Arts Council’s Emerging Artist Program. She received a Durham Women of Achievement Silver Medallion award and is an associate member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. "My current work is on canvas—mixed media with acrylic, gold leaf, oil sticks, pumice, marble dust, silk tissue and collage elements. Intense color continues to be the core of my process—sometimes brilliant, other times muted with hues hinting at the mystery of the process. I am constantly in awe of the creative energy that leads me to the next idea. My process is complete when the viewer connects with my work." Want to see more of Nancy Tuttle May's work, and others?
