Paul Reimer is a Canadian-based artist based in Cranbrook, BC. He began his career as an artist-blacksmith at the age of 15 when he apprenticed at the Kootenay Forge under the mentorship of John Smith. The blacksmith and iron sculptor earned an international reputation for his large, public art projects across North America. Over the past 30 years, Reimer has been commissioned to produce large-scale residential, commercial and public art projects across North America. Smaller, table-top scale works act as studies for large-scale possibilities. He is inspired by elements he sees in the world around him and before him, from architecture and design, to culture and history, to relationships and nature. The sculptor appreciates the historical role of blacksmiths as “masters of utilitarian sculpture,” building gates, railings, and furniture that have outlasted the kinds that commissioned them. Today, the craft of the artist-blacksmith remains entrenched in that respected tradition: to create lasting beauty from iron. With the heat of fire, creativity flows easily from Reimer into the red-hot, malleable iron to form a limitless variety of shapes and works that facilitate a spirit of connection. Reimer’s sculptures and artistic furniture are featured in galleries in the US and Canada and his work is collected by art enthusiasts in many countries around the world.
