Pauline Marcelle - Artist Statement I am an artist deeply influenced by my Caribbean heritage from Dominica and my experiences livingin Europe and beyond. My work explores themes of identity, culture, history, and the environmentusing various mediums like painting, sculpture, video, installation, and mixed media. At the heart ofmy art is a desire to examine the human experience and the ways geography, heritage, andperspective shape who we are. A key inspiration for my work is the legacy of the maroons, the enslaved people who escaped tobuild communities defined by resilience and defiance. Their story speaks to themes oftransformation, resistance, and survival, which I reflect on by reclaiming and reimagining culturalnarratives that connect the past and present. My art highlights the contrasts in our world: beauty alongside violence, tradition merging withmodernity, and local stories intersecting with global ones. I use bold colours, abstract forms, andlayered textures to capture these tensions, often incorporating recycled materials and clothing. Thisapproach transforms materials and honours their history, addressing sustainability, renewal, and theurgent realities of climate change and climate injustice. Through my work, I seek to reveal howenvironmental crises disproportionately impact vulnerable communities, inviting reflection onresilience and responsibility. Above all, my work is about the connection between people, histories, and environments. Byblending African diasporic influences with contemporary art, I celebrate black identity as rich, diverse, and multifaceted. My art aims to challenge outdated perspectives, celebrate heritage, andconfront the erasure of important stories from history. Through my creations, I hope to inspire reflection, empowerment, and meaningful conversations. Each piece invites viewers to see the world as an interconnected tapestry of relationships, remindingus of our shared histories and the transformative power of resilience and creativity.
