Known for her bold, colour-led practice and experimental approach to surface, Sarah Emily Porter creates abstract works that sit between painting and textiles, fine art and contemporary craft. In her latest series, machine-stitched calico, linen and canvas form an architectural framework, while poured acrylic moves across the surface like shifting light on buildings, refracting and distorting as it ebbs and flows. Visually striking and materially assured, the works reward close looking, revealing architectural order and moments of chance within their layered surfaces. “I am interested in the tension between control and unpredictability. Stitching introduces a deliberate structure—almost a form of architectural drawing—while poured paint resists control, moving and finding its own balance. Colour is never fixed; each hue reacts to the next, constantly altering the composition. It is these unpredictable and serendipitous moments that I hope to highlight in my work.” Sarah Emily Porter lives and works in London. She studied Architectural History at Durham University (2005–2008) before attending the Slade School of Art (2014) and Chelsea College of Arts (2016). Porter has received numerous accolades for her work, including the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize (2018) and the New Ashgate Rising Stars Award (2021). Her corporate commissions include paintings for the penthouse at Nobu Hotel London Portman Square. She has exhibited internationally, including in Paris, the Czech Republic and South Korea, and her work has been featured in publications such as the Financial Times, Dezeen, Elle Decoration and the Architects’ Journal.
