Raimondas Gailiūnas (b. 1956) lives and works in Rokiškis. A painter whose career spans more than four decades is known for his expressive, color-intense compositions. Gailiūnas fuses abstraction with narrative, symbolism, and personal mythology. A member of the influential neo-expressionist artist group "Angis" since 1990, he began exhibiting in 1979 and formalized his academic training by completing his studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1996. He has worked as an art teacher and lecturer while developing a prolific studio practice. Strung on a single narrative thread, Gailiūnas’s canvasses feature multi-figural stories that employ bright colours to howl out the essential stages of man’s life and the matters of his cultural and social environment. The painter's compositions are intricately curled in form and iconography, with stylised vegetal and geometric motifs that expose swarming and spawning animalistic and anthropomorphic elements, along with expressions and grimaces which add further information. Gailiūnas was awarded Best Artist at ArtVilnius’13. His works are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Lithuanian Art Museum and MO Museum. Represented by Contour Art Gallery since its founding, he remains a vital figure in Lithuanian contemporary painting.
