A graduate of the Pratt Institute, Rebecca Leveille Guay is a contemporary force in figurative painting, celebrated for a style that bridges art-historical classicism with modern magical surrealism. For nearly two decades, she was a titan of the fantasy and comic industries—working with agent Denis Kitchen and producing legendary work for Magic: The Gathering and DC/Vertigo—before making a decisive shift in 2011 to focus exclusively on personal and gallery-driven oil painting. Her current practice is a sophisticated exploration of the "female gaze," utilizing a distinctive ability to compose lyrical, gestured figures largely from her imagination. Moving away from literal narrative, Guay focuses on the poetic, delving into themes of sensuality, domesticity, and the psychological weight of pop-culture imagery. She frequently leans into her past identity as a "creator of pop culture" to interrogate how collective mythologies shape modern identity, creating works that are as intellectually confronting as they are unabashedly beautiful. Guay’s large-scale canvases have garnered acclaim from art world icons like Jerry Saltz and have been exhibited venues including the Musée d’Orsay, and the Untitled Space. In 2025, her solo exhibition MUSE at the Philippe Labaune Gallery further showcased her mastery of texture and material, marrying thick impastos with delicate graphite marks. A recipient of multiple Spectrum Gold Medals and a finalist for the Bennett Prize, Guay remains a premier figure in the movement to reclaim the figure within contemporary avant-garde art.
