RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979) is a Los Angeles–born contemporary artist known for his iconic script that blends graffiti, calligraphy, and influences from ancient writing systems. Emerging from LA’s 1990s street art scene, he developed a distinctive visual language inspired by Arabic, Hebrew, Asian, and Latin typography - creating rhythmic, almost cryptographic compositions that emphasize form over literal meaning.Working with spray paint, acrylic, and enamel, RETNA builds layered surfaces filled with tightly structured symbols that evoke both sacred manuscripts and urban graffiti. His bold, often monochromatic palettes and monumental murals have made his work instantly recognizable worldwide.RETNA’s art bridges cultures and identities, reflecting his Salvadoran, African-American, and Cherokee heritage. His work has been featured at major institutions, in global public murals, and in high-profile collaborations with brands and musicians, including Louis Vuitton and Justin Bieber. Despite international acclaim, he remains rooted in street art, using his visual language to inspire, unify, and spark dialogue across communities.
