Rob Carter is Professor Emeritus of Typography and Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, he has served as Visiting Professor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Numerous design awards include those from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York Type Directors Club, New York Art Directors Club, Society of Typographic Arts, Creativity, Print, and the International Design Review. He is author/coauthor of more than 15 books, including American Typography Today, the five-volume Working with Type series, Digital Color and Type, and Meggs: Making Graphic Design History. With Philip B. Meggs, he co-authored Typographic Design: Form and Communication (seven editions) and Typographic Specimens: The Great Typefaces. He is co-author with John Bryan of the landmark book America’s Favorite Flies. A counterpoint to Carter’s career as a designer is a yearning to travel, to immerse himself into wild and exotic places, to visually interpret and explore his experiences through drawing, painting, and photographic documentation. While wandering deserts in search of ancient petroglyphs and pictographs, he has over the years gleaned a significant photographic collection of these cultural artifacts. His expertise as a typographer, vested interest in visual language and anthropology, and frequent travels provide significant influences and points of departure for his work.
