Over a three decades' career in glass, Rob Stern has risen to the top of the field.Stern has traveled, lived, studied, and taught extensively abroad, and has worked with the most accomplished glass artists and masters throughout the world. Since 2004, Stern has operated his own studio in the Wynnwood Arts District of Miami where he and his team create and execute all aspects of design, production, and installation of custom work. Born in Miami and raised in Atlanta, Rob grew up in a creative household—his mother was an art teacher, and his father worked in the film industry while pursuing photography. He attended Northside High School for the Performing Arts, where he was part of an elite touring troupe, performing as a singer, dancer, and actor. Outside the arts, Rob led an active lifestyle, embracing traditional sports along with skateboarding, surfing, and rock climbing. This dynamic blend of creativity, physicality, and an adventurous spirit—passed down from his grandparents—would later shape his path as a glass artist. Rob studied art at San Francisco State University, where he first discovered glassmaking. He spent five years apprenticing at John Lewis Glass, an industrial casting studio in Oakland, honing his craft. A semester abroad touring glass factories across Europe further deepened his passion, which led him to Pilchuck Glass School—an internationally renowned institution dedicated to the art of glass. There, he studied, apprenticed, and assisted numerous master artists, expanding both his technical skill and artistic vision. In 1992, after serving as a teaching assistant to Czech master Petr Novotny, Rob was invited to work at the Ajeto Glass Factory in the Czech Republic. This marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration. He lived and worked in the region for several years and continues to work closely with Petr, participating in demonstrations and conducting workshops around the globe.
