Robert grew up in the seaside hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor, NY. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Robert approaches his work by inventing from nature. Within his landscapes, Robert sets out to evoke the feeling of inner calmness and solitude. “I try to achieve that inherent emotion of vastness. Capturing those intangible atmospheric reflections of light, movement, and space that occur within our surroundings." Growing up surrounded by the marshlands and estuaries along the eastern shores of Long Island was an everyday ritual in his life. Robert tries to bring that genuine spirit and energy into each of his works. Using the landscape as his stage, he orchestrates “lost and found” atmospheric relationships between sky and ground. Many of his paintings deal with a balance of abstraction, using dramatic cloud formations against the a vast open horizon. These relationships of reflective light create the tension play between land, sea and sky. He describes his process: “Skies are constantly in motion, reflecting light differently throughout the day. It’s within these observations I try to evoke that emotion of being at one with nature." Robert has a wide range: from the Abstract Expressionists to Matisse to inspiration within in his work. Robert's works have been included in the "American Collage Exhibition" in NYC's Gerald Peters Gallery along side such masters as Edward Hopper, Richard Diebenkorn, Romare Bearden and Frank Stella. His paintings are held in both public and private collections, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Columbia University, the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, and Taylor Swift. Robert has received numerous honors, including the Gold Medal (AGFAS) SPACES from The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Hecksher Museum Award (Huntington, New York) and The New York Times Award. Robert spends his summers on the island of Martha’s Vineyard and paints in his 1850’s barn studio in Hudson, Ohio.
