Originally from New Zealand and now based in Portland, Oregon, Robin Kerr describes herself as an “accidental immigrant”—a perspective that quietly shapes her work.As someone who exists between cultures, Robin often finds herself in a space of in-betweenness, and her art mirrors that liminality. Her compositions are layered and full of contrasts: large, bold shapes clash with scribbled lines; blocks of color are interrupted by fleeting specks; clean edges meet smudged overlays. There’s a tension in the work—an interplay between certainty and ambiguity, between what is confidently asserted and what feels like a guess. It’s this tension that draws the viewer in. Things are not exactly as they seem at first glance, and that’s the point.
