Rosalie Neilson has always been captivated by color. One of her earliest memories is peering into the throats of tulips, marveling at the satin sheen of red, yellow, and black. Growing up in Oregon—where much of the year is bathed in shades of green, blue, and gray—she developed a heightened sensitivity to color and contrast. In this softly lit landscape, bright hues came alive in vivid relief, shaping her lifelong fascination with chromatic interplay. Weaving became the natural extension of that passion. Drawn to the vibrancy of weft-faced and warp-faced block weaves, Rosalie discovered the rhythmic geometry of pattern through color. Of Scandinavian heritage, she gravitated toward the Swedish technique of warp rep and began exploring the striking designs that emerge from the interchange of two layers of color. Working on a sixteen-shaft loom with computer-assisted treadling, Rosalie creates series of abstract color compositions within a single threading system—each sequence unfolding into the next. After more than twenty-five years of weaving rep, she remains inspired by its endless variations and the limitless possibilities for discovery through structure, pattern, and color.
