Rosalind Robinson, an Academician of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) since 2020, stands as a formidable voice in contemporary figurative painting, celebrated for work that is both intensely personal and deeply rooted in art history. Her work possesses a unique and highly developed style, yet is explicitly anchored in the rigorous technical tradition of Early Netherlandish portrait painting. This historical dialogue with Northern European masters—known for their pioneering use of oil paint and psychological realism—resonates directly with Stephenson’s Gallery’s expansion into curating exceptional Northern art. Robinson’s commitment to working mainly in oils on either linen or gesso panels reflects this dedication to the luminous layering and meticulous finish of the Old Masters. The extraordinary precision and command of materials seen in her contemporary studio work are the result of three decades of rigorous professional practice. Between 1980 and 2010, following an early career as a scenic artist for the BBC , Robinson pursued a long and successful career as a mural artist and specialist decorator, fulfilling commissions for both commercial and private clients throughout the UK and Northern Europe. This specialised background—encompassing techniques such as trompe l’oeil, gilding, and original paint effects —provided a foundation of technical mastery that few contemporary painters possess. Since 2010, she has concentrated on producing powerful figurative paintings from her Wiltshire studio. Central to her practice is the creation of imaginary portrait heads, designed to explore the "mystery implicit in facial expression" and to engage the viewer in speculation about the subject’s origins and contemporary relevance. She uses the compelling ‘direct gaze’ to actively "redress the balance" of the diminishing physical connection in our modern digital age, constantly seeking to examine the importance of human interactions. One of her stylistic trademarks, emanating from her theatrical roots, is the intricate headdress or head-form. These meticulously crafted constructions of paper, jewels, or ribbon replace natural hair and function as modern iconography, blending the discipline of the maker with the symbolic requirements of historical portraiture. As a trusted source for "market-tested" artworks offering "enduring value" , Robinson’s position is secured by consistent critical acclaim and institutional validation. Her award-winning work is represented nationally and internationally in public and private collections, including the Royal West of England Academy Permanent Collection, Chippenham Museum Permanent Collection, and Wiltshire Museum. Her impressive awards history includes:2025 Winner of the Meltone Framers Award at the BSA Annual Open Exhibition, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.2018 Winner of ‘The Artist’ Editor’s Choice Award at the SWA Annual Open in Mall Galleries London.2016 Winner of the Rosemary & Co Artist’s Brushes Award at the SWA Annual Open in Mall Galleries London.2011 Winner of the Crack Illustration Award at the RWA Annual Open in Bristol. She is a Member of the Society of Women Artists (elected 2017) and exhibits regularly in London, Bristol, and Bath, having been selected for premier exhibitions including The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal West of England Academy, The Discerning Eye, and the Royal Watercolour Society. Her ongoing success in the exhibition circuit is further confirmed by her selection for the SWA exhibition in February 2026. Furthermore, her continued intellectual engagement with her craft was recently highlighted in the Considering Art Podcast
