Born in New Zealand, Ross Tamlin emigrated to Sydney, Australia, where he began training at art schools in Meadowbank and Brisbane. He honed his skills at Artist Studios 1+2 in Rozelle, Sydney, and from his own explorations in his studio in rural Australia. He has been a practicing artist for 30 years with 18 solo exhibitions, and participated in many exhibitions in Australia, winning a number of prizes and awards. Tamlin’s signature works are his text paintings, which initially appear to viewers as being made of corrugated iron, but in actuality are enamel and oil paintings on canvas. These works are Tamlin’s contemporary interpretation of a landscape, using text for place names, particularly cities and suburbs, and lately ski resorts and towns. The names are evocative of past memories and events, and the colors overlay a mood. Not coincidentally, Geography and Town Planning were Tamlin’s first choices for a tertiary education. Combined with his fine arts and graphic arts training, these influences have come together to produce this signature text-based series. Tamlin worked in paint manufacturing before he became a full-time artist and experimented in recycling paint and color samples into his artwork. These artworks require many layers of canvas sealer, primer and enamel paint, and then are finished with oil paints and varnish.
