Artist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) was a prominent Mexican painter and printmaker of the mid-twentieth century. Throughout his career he split his time between Mexico City and New York; citing the diverse influences of European Modernism, Surrealism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. Tamayo incorporated these influences into his work through attention to form and symbolism. Vibrant, flat colors work in tandem with abstracted figures to create Tamayo’s distinctive aesthetic. This graphic style ties Tamayo’s oeuvre back to his early roots in the Mexican printmaking tradition.
