Ryan Cobourn’s expressive, gestural abstract paintings are based on memories and experiences of the figure, the landscape, and the garden. The allusions and references remain slightly out of reach –blurring the boundaries between representation and abstraction. There is a physical, tactile play between the veiling and exposing of forms with creamy, viscous paint, which can feel agitated, tender, and melancholic all at once. Ryan Cobourn’s work focuses on depictions of the world around him. Usually based on drawings from observation, the paintings, through their creation, change and veer off into abstraction. He received his MFA at Indiana University where he studied with Tim Kennedy and Barry Gealt. He has been the recipient of multiple awards and grants including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Vermont Studio Center Artist Grant. He recently retired from living in Brooklyn, New York after fifteen years. He currently lives on Long Island, New York with his family. Ryan Cobourn’s work focuses on depictions of the world around him. The paintings’ content emerges through a protracted process of deconstructing and rebuilding of the image, based on memory and intuition, drawing on the natural world as a starting point before dissolving into vibrant fields of movement and color. Though distinct in subject matter, each series engages in a visual conversation, reflecting Coborn’s fluid, intuitive process.“My work isn’t about capturing a specific place, but about distilling a feeling—a moment of recognition or connection,” Cobourn explains. “Each painting is a translation, a way of processing and reinterpreting past experiences through paint.” Click here to view: Ryan Cobourn Artwork Catalog
