Ryozo Morishita is a contemporary Japanese artist whose work explores the deep interconnection between humanity and nature. Rooted in the philosophies of both Eastern spirituality and Western inquiry, his art meditates on the passage of time, the nature of being, and the evolving perception of space. Morishita writes:“My subject is life. The representation of space is a construction of history, habit, and thought. We merge these constituencies, catching a glimpse of passing time: these are the recurrences of wonder, anxieties that direct the quiet search for the complexity of life.” He reflects on the differing philosophies of East and West—how Western art often pursues a scientific analysis of being, while in Japan, art arises from a spiritual communion with nature. “Thus,” he writes, “the recognition of these concurrent methodologies is an expression toward a symbiotic ideology.” Working primarily with sumi ink, acrylic, and mixed media on handmade washi paper, Morishita’s paintings evoke both quiet restraint and immense depth. His works inhabit the two-dimensional physicality of painting while offering the sense of infinite spatial expression. Through layered washes, deliberate voids, and subtle shifts of tone, he acknowledges humanity as an inseparable part of nature itself. Morishita has exhibited internationally, and his paintings are admired for their contemplative energy and philosophical resonance. His studio practice is deeply influenced by the natural landscapes of Japan—especially the Hidaka Mountains of Hokkaido, where he finds daily inspiration for his art and writing. He often expresses this reverence through poetry, such as in his reflection:The day of start! The morning sun dyed the Hidaka Mountains and wrapped our home.Chorus of birds woke me up.Ezo deer, Northern fox, White hare, Red mouse and Mole patternsTake a walk on the road drawn on the white canvas.Only sound of the footsteps of the two...Have a good day and peace!!!
