Sandy Graves’ bronze sculptures capture the spirit of movement, memory, and connection through forms that balance strength with remarkable delicacy. Working between realism and abstraction, Graves distills her subjects to their essential gestures, allowing line, space, and rhythm to carry emotional meaning. Her sculptures often feature elongated silhouettes and open passages of negative space, creating compositions that feel fluid and alive — as though shaped by motion itself. Drawn especially to equine subjects, Graves approaches the horse not as a literal representation but as an expression of energy and familiarity. Sweeping, calligraphic lines suggest musculature and movement while inviting viewers to complete the form through their own perception and experience. Richly layered patinas shift between warm earth tones and luminous highlights, reinforcing a sense of vitality and timelessness within the bronze. The work feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in the Western experience, honoring the enduring relationship between humans, animals, and the landscapes they share. Graves views sculpture as an inherently personal and interactive art form. Intended to be experienced in the round, her work encourages viewers to move around it, engage physically with it, and form their own emotional connections — transforming observation into participation. Whether abstracted or figurative, each piece seeks to evoke moments of recognition and memory drawn from shared human experience. Born in Denver, Colorado, and raised in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Graves discovered her passion for art early, first exhibiting her work at county fairs as a 4-H member. She later attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in sculpture in 1993. Following graduation, she spent sixteen years as a high school art educator in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, nurturing creativity while continuing to develop her own artistic practice. A lifelong equestrian, Graves’ personal history with horses continues to inform her work today, providing both subject matter and emotional foundation. Her sculptures reflect a career devoted to exploring connection — between people and animals, abstraction and form, and the quiet yet powerful moments that define our relationship with the natural world.
