Sarah Lutz (American, b. 1967) is a New York-based artist who splits her time between the Hudson Valley, NY and Truro, MA. With a studio practice spanning more than 40 years, Lutz is primarily a painter who also collaborates regularly with master printer Marina Ancona of 10 Grand Press, Brooklyn. In her studio practice, Lutz employs a wide range of materials, tools and methods; she exploits the pure and varied physicality of her materials while also exploring their alchemistic potential. Unintentional juxtapositions happen by chance and inform the sequence of decisions that are seemingly accidental but in fact deliberate and contextual. Lutz’s work is in numerous private and public collections, and she exhibits her paintings and prints regularly. She is represented by Schoolhouse Gallery where she has been exhibiting since 2002. Lutz spent much of her childhood in Antigua, Guatemala and has had the opportunity to return regularly. The immersive sights, sounds, and vibrant palette were a strong early influence; the specificity and beauty of this largely unchanged place continue to inform the artist’s practice today. "Although firmly rooted in abstraction, my work makes clear references to the natural world—forms emanate from seascapes, cellular matrixes, organic matter. My vocabulary of images has accrued over many years and is deeply personal. The forms are the characters in my evolving aesthetic narrative, which defines the arc of my studio practice. In the print shop, the images build slowly, layer by layer, as light, color and subject cohere and crystalize. I want my work to be beautiful, but at the same time unsettling; serious, but with a comedic aspect. In each piece I strive to create a world of light and movement, space and joy, that feels at once familiar while hinting at something ethereal and unknown." —Sarah Lutz
