Sarah Walker (born Bethesda, Maryland) is an abstract painter whose work is characterized by dense visual fields, layered structures, and diagrammatic forms that draw from scientific models, cartography, and information systems. Using abstraction as a means to engage complexity and accumulation, Walker explores how the mind organizes experience, memory, and visual data. Across decades of work, she has developed a distinctive visual language that balances intuitive mark-making with rigorous conceptual inquiry. Walker received a BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been an artist-in-residence at the MacDowell Colony, Ucross Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, and the American Academy in Rome. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums, including Pierogi, Gregory Lind Gallery, and the Rose Art Museum, as well as university museums throughout the United States, with additional presentations in Europe and Scandinavia. Selected group exhibitions include those at the Museum of Modern Art, the National Academy Museum, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, the Frist Art Museum, and the Chrysler Museum of Art. Internationally, her work has been shown at Galerie Jolie (Netherlands), Gropea Kunstraum (Germany), and Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (Norway). Walker is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Jacob Lawrence Award and Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, the Rappaport Foundation Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting, and support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has been reviewed in Art in America, Art Critical, The New Criterion, New York Magazine, The Boston Globe, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Her work is held in major public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the National Academy of Design, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the Neuberger Museum, the DeCordova Museum, and the New Jersey State Museum. Walker is a member of the National Academy of Design and is represented by Pierogi Gallery, Brooklyn.
