Scott Ruthven is a landscape painter whose work is grounded in his connection to the natural world. He paints in oil, blending realism and impressionism to express not just the appearance of a place but the feeling of being there. His brushwork remains visible and deliberate, allowing each painting to hold both structure and motion.Ruthven often begins his process outdoors, working on location to capture light, atmosphere, and movement in real time. These plein air studies become the basis for larger studio pieces, where he refines the composition and deepens the emotional tone. His influences include the Russian landscape tradition and Western Impressionism, but his clearest guide is the land itself. His work invites viewers into a moment of reflection, offering a counterbalance to the pace of daily life. Ruthven’s intention is to create spaces of calm and connection, where collectors can revisit their own relationship to the natural world through paintings that are meant to be lived with over time.Ruthven’s family roots are in the Inland Northwest and he spent much of his early life in that region. He now lives in Colorado with his wife and is the father of four adult children. Outside the studio, he enjoys fly fishing, camping, and travel. He is also an art collector with a deep appreciation for the work of other artists.
