Seth Allen is an abstract painter whose work begins with a feeling—an underlying tone or energy that takes shape through line, color, and surface. Each painting develops through a layered process of application and removal, with paint built up and then sanded back to reveal hidden hues and emerging rhythms beneath. The work evolves through uncovering as much as through making.Allen’s compositions balance intuition and control. Crisp lines intersect with softened fields of color, creating moments of contrast and movement. Subtle traces of earlier decisions remain visible, giving each surface a sense of depth and quiet complexity. Before turning fully to painting, Allen studied theatre in Los Angeles and New York City and spent more than two decades performing on stage, in film, television, radio, and voice-over. He co-founded The Verona Studio, a black box theatre in Salem, Oregon, known for its experimental and demanding productions. That background continues to inform his visual practice, shaping an awareness of timing, pacing, and emotional clarity.Allen considers a painting complete when it communicates the feeling that initiated it—when the work resolves into something cohesive and felt. He hopes that same moment of recognition carries to the viewer, where line and color come together to suggest emotion, memory, or narrative. His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Portland, Salem, and Palm Desert.Represented by Illumine Gallery.
