Born in Bennington, New Hampshire, Sidney F. Willis (Sid) is a distinguished American Postwar & Contemporary painter known for his luminous still lifes and impressionistic landscapes. A graduate of the Vesper George School of Art, Sid continued his training under the renowned Robert Douglas Hunter. As an artist shaped by both formal education and the traditional apprentice system, Sid builds his paintings with craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity. Sid's artwork is celebrated for its strong design, exquisite color harmonies, and consummate draftsmanship. His compositions often feature rare and distinctive antique toys, dolls, figures, and textiles, carefully sourced from throughout the New England countryside. These unique arrangements showcase a refined elegance of design and achieve a remarkable purity of color that is rarely seen.An American Impressionist, Sid spends much of his time painting outdoors, directly from nature, capturing the diverse and beautiful New England scenery. His landscapes reflect his deep connection to the natural world, while his still lifes combine solid academic values with keen impressionistic observations, resulting in compositions that are both unusual and captivating. Sid’s work has been featured in numerous one-man shows and prestigious exhibitions, including the Ogunquit Art Center, Council of American Artists exhibitions, Southern Vermont Art Show, and the Academic Artists Show. He has received over 25 awards, including:Four Gold Medals at the Jordan Exhibition (Boston), Still Life Prize, Pastel Society of America, Still Life Prize, Ellsworth Gallery (Simsbury, Connecticut), Gold Medal and Best in Show, Guild of Boston Artists, Gold Medal, Heritage Salon Invitational (Alexandria, Virginia). In addition to his painting career, Sid has shared his knowledge and expertise through teaching at Franklin Pierce College, Sharon Art Center in New Hampshire, and the Vesper George School of Art. Recognized as one of the finest painters in the United States, his work continues to captivate viewers with its elegance, precision, and harmony.
