SKY HOYT-ARTIST STATEMENTMy work is informed by the endless variety of images surrounding me, and my imagination is captivated by the charged arrangement of everyday objects; gardens and their roots in folklore/mythology; and creating an encapsulated world where the elements commune but with only a vague or opaque narrative. The method I use sometimes starts with a composite sketch in Photoshop, where I mix and match imagery from my own work and from the extensive library of decorative objects, places, interiors, figures and other artwork I have collected. I create a digital collage maquette as the first step of a painting, then laying down colors, shapes and patterns onto the actual canvas. I add painted areas of pattern and collaged textiles. As this process on canvas evolves, I frequently return a photo of the painting-in-process to Photoshop, to see what other visual possibilities exist. I also start with painted objects on paper which I move around like puzzle pieces and then adhere them with acrylic medium, generating the composition as I go along. As the composition evolves, I begin thinking about the paint surface. My materials are acrylic on canvas with collaged media including textiles, rice paper and gold leaf. The textiles are a nod to my love of pattern and interest in interior design and fabrics. I also use Okawara rice paper with specially formulated polyurethane medium. The rice paper adds a watercolor-like quality to the paint surface and also creates complex layers. There is meaningful hands-on quality to the process of tearing, cutting and pasting paper and fabric onto the surface. This becomes a fascinating dialogue with the digital process. I am interested in blurring the lines between digital, found, and traditional media. SKY HOYT -ARTIST BIOI was born in Panama and grew up in Bronxville New York and Stonington Connecticut.
