Stella "Texas" Elmendorf Tylor (San Antonio, TX, 1885 - 1980, New Braunfels, TX) Tylor, Stella Texas Elmendorf (Texie) (Mrs. W. Russell Tylor). 1885 -1980. San Antonio, Austin. Painter, teacher, lecturer, draftsman. Tylor was born and reared in San Antonio where she attended public schools. In 1910 she graduated from the College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Woman's University), Denton, having received a scholarship given by Mary Eleanor Brackenridge of San Antonio. Tylor went then to New York where she was apparently a student of Robert Henri. She traveled in Europe and after completing her art studies in New York taught in a rural school near Vancouver, British Columbia. Leaving Canada, she painted and visited friends along the coast of California, stopping for a time to paint in Carmel before making her way back to Texas. On scholarship, Tylor attended the University of Texas, Austin, and took a degree in architecture and design (1915), then worked as an architectural draftsman at the university before joining the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In the 1920s she attended Columbia University and afterward the University of Illinois, Urbana. She taught in the Urbana public schools, in the public schools of Madison, Wisconsin, and in Galesburg, Illinois.Following her husband's death in Urbana in 1946, Tylor returned to San Antonio. Afterward she was a student of Frederic Taubes and Arthur Dow. The readers of San Antonio newspapers chose her Outstanding Woman of the Year in the Arts in 1968.
