Stephen Maine's paintings occupy a sustained and quietly radical position within the history of American abstraction. Working from his studio in West Cornwall, Connecticut, Maine pursues a practice grounded in process, material, and the generative possibilities of color — one shaped in equal measure by over three decades immersed in the intellectual and visual life of New York City. Maine's work unfolds through careful attention to how paint behaves: how it accumulates, resists, and reveals. Each canvas becomes a record of decisions made and revised, a field of chromatic relations that is at once rigorously structured and deeply intuitive. His paintings ask to be looked at slowly, and they reward that patience. His work has been exhibited widely, with recent presentations at Pazo Fine Art, Washington, DC; Flinn Gallery, Greenwich, Connecticut; Private Public Gallery, Hudson, New York; and Satchel Projects, Hionas Gallery, John Molloy Gallery, and Project: ARTspace in New York City, among others. Critical responses to his solo exhibitions have appeared in ARTnews, the Brooklyn Rail, Artcritical.com, Two Coats of Paint, and The New Criterion. Maine has been supported by the New York Foundation for the Arts and Yaddo, and is a longstanding member of American Abstract Artists.
