Stuart Dunkel is a classically trained musician-turned-painter whose work blends exquisite technical skill with playful imagination. After an accomplished international career as an oboist—including performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony—he shifted his focus to the visual arts in the mid-1990s. His disciplined musical background continues to inform his approach to painting, shaping both his precision and his creative rhythm.Dunkel studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Academy of Realist Art, and with several leading realist painters, building a strong foundation in classical technique. While he initially explored a variety of subjects, it was the emergence of his now-iconic mouse that defined his artistic voice. These charming and expressive paintings, inspired by a moment of humor at home, have become beloved for their blend of narrative wit, emotional range, and masterful realism. From a distance, they reveal sophisticated harmonies of color, form, and composition—echoes of the musical sensibility he brings to his work. His paintings have earned numerous awards and recognition, including honors from the Guild of Boston Artists and the Copley Society. Dunkel is also the author of two books exploring creativity and the artistic process. Today, he continues to paint, teach, and inspire as the director of the Nautilus School of Realist Art in Watertown, Massachusetts, where he remains dedicated to continually refining his craft.
