Sue Muskat Knoll is a painter whose vibrant, layered works merge iconic imagery, text, and color theory to create playful yet penetrating investigations of popular culture, memory, and language. Working primarily in acrylic, Muskat transforms familiar subjects—vintage toys, cartoon characters, Shaker designs, and everyday objects—into richly saturated meditations on meaning, nostalgia, and contemporary life. Her process is rooted in experimentation with highly opaque, water-based media that allow for precise layering and luminous color. Muskat often incorporates fragmentary text into her compositions, creating visual conversations between word and image that began during the pandemic and have become central to her practice. Series such as Alone Together, Big Energy, Inheritance, Sitting on a Branch, and Just Words explore themes ranging from isolation and connection to the legacies of material culture and the slipperiness of communication. Muskat's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including shows at Bill Arning Exhibitions in Kinderhook, New York, Bernay Fine Art, the Ely Center of Contemporary Art, and the Gallery at Spencertown Academy. Her paintings have been reviewed in publications including Chronogram, and she has been featured on PBS's AHA! A House for Arts.
