Brearey’s work captures fleeting moments with precise detail and ephemerality that convey the special connections among humans, animals, and the wilderness. Her gestural mark-making techniques and chosen media become material traces of memory. They capture wondrous encounters with the world. --DJ Hellerman, CuratorBrattleboro Museum & Art Center Susan Brearey received her MFA in painting & printmaking in l994 from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI and her BA in French Literature and Studio Art at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA in l988. Her work has been widely exhibited in the United States, UK, Europe and Asia. In 2007 at the invitation of the Meridian International Center in Washington, DC, her work was included in “Out West, The Great American Landscape” and exhibited at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. “Out West” was presented by the Meridian International Center and the National Art Museum of China and subsequently traveled to six major museums in China including; Urumqu, Xi’an,Shanghai, Qingdao and Hong Kong. She was included in the Hood Museum’s “Post Pastoral, New Images of the New England Landscape” at Dartmouth College. A distinguished panel of curators including Klaus Kertess, New York art critic and curator and Maureen O'Brien of the RISD Museum of Art, included her work in The Parrish Art Museum's Centennial Open Exhibition in Southampton, NY in April l998. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The China Daily and Art New England. Susan exhibited her work in ‘Women in Wildlife’ at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY in 2000. She has received awards from the Grumbacher Corporation, Liquitex Corp. and The Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, TN. Susan was a visiting professor for the Winter/Spring term at the Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art, Pont Aven, France in 2009. She has been a Visiting Artist & Scholar at the American Academy in Rome, and a Visiting Artist in the Graduate Painting Program at Bretton Hall College of The University of Leeds in northern England. Susan has taught and lectured in several painting programs across the country and abroad including; Keene State College, Keene, NH, The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, Rollins College, Winter Park, FL, Marlboro College, Marlboro, VT, Haverford College, Haverford, PA, Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art, Pont Aven, France and Rhode Island School of Design. She also taught painting, drawing and printmaking at The Putney School in Putney, VT from 1991 until her retirement in 2022. Her work is in several permanent and private collections including; Bank Of Boston, Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville, TN, National Dance Institute, New York, NY, Meditech Corporation, Westwood, MA, The Putney School, Putney, VT and The Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT. Her work is included in many private collections including well known artists and actors, including American actor, Sandra Bullock and legendary dancer, Jacques D’amboise, founder of National Dance Institute. Susan has curated many exhibitions for the Michael S. Currier Center Gallery at The Putney School, including work by; Sally Mann, Elise Ansel, Chakaia Booker, Alex Webb, David Plowden, Jane Dickson, Ann McCoy, Conrad Armstrong, Viktor Valeseck, Frank Sansone, David Rohn, Dylan Stone, Altoon Sultan, John Byrne Cooke, Paul Bowen, Charles Ginnever and many others...She has brought writers and dancers to the school including; Alexandra Fuller and Jacques D'amboise. She has also produced several musical concerts for the school in conjunction with the gallery program, including the 2011 series celebrating the Currier Gallery exhibition 'Photographs from the collection of the New England Folk Music Archives'. The musical series featured performances by; Peter Rowan, David Amram, Judy Collins, Rory Block, Red Heart The Ticker, Tim Eriksen, Diamond Doves and others...Susan also worked to bring Ezzie Films to Putney to film live performances of professional and student musicians for the Independent film; 'For The Love Of The Music'. At Susan’s invitation, Vermont Public Television featured exhibiting artist, David Plowden, in their Points North program. Susan has also worked with musicians Tim Eriksen and Peter Irvine in Pumpkintown, Songs, Stories and Magic Lantern Projections from an imaginary New England Village. They have performed from Goteborg, Sweden, Northampton, MA, Los Angeles, CA, Berkeley, CA, Paris, France, Providence, RI to England and Wales, Dartmouth College and Sandglass Theater in Putney, VT. Brearey was represented by the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 24 years under the direction of Maria Hajic. She has also been represented by Texann Ivy Fine Arts, Orlando, FL and Carol Corey Fine Art, Kent, CT. She has recently returned from Rome, Italy where she was honored with a Visiting Artist & Scholar fellowship in 2024. She currently lives and works in Putney, Vermont.
