Suzy Barnard was born in England, earned her BFA in Painting in 1980 from Bristol Polytechnic, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981. She obtained her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1984. Still residing in San Francisco, Barnard paints from her studio at Pier 70 where her window overlooks the water, and a parade of huge cargo ships. The changing light and weather in her view provides endless material for her painterly investigations. The rush of seeing color in the world around her has also prompted recent work featuring larger-than-life, blousy, exuberant flowers and unfurling foliage. Barnard drags, scrapes, smears, and brushes her oil paints, wanting to capture the life force of these scenes in a full-bodied way.
