TAFA was born and raised in Ghana and now based in Harlem, New York, his workreflects a deep connection to cultural memory, rhythm, and spiritual lineage. Workingprimarily in oil, TAFA creates abstract compositions charged with social, political, andreligious undertones, brought to life through bold color, expressive movement, anddynamic mark-making. “My paintings are my drum song, my dance of the soul,” TAFA explains. “I am like thedivine drummer, trying to materialize the transient, the spiritual, to search the soul ofour hopes, fears, and visions.” His work draws heavily from music, sport, andperformance, translating motion and sound into a visual language that feels bothvisceral and ceremonial. For TAFA, creation is a spiritual and communal act rather than an expression ofindividual ego. His paintings seek connection and collective consciousness, reachingbeyond the self toward ancestral memory and shared experience. “Delving into my beingis not paramount,” he states. “What is pivotal is reaching into the internal spaces thathave created an eternity of memory—our primordial memories.” Through this lens, eachwork becomes a site of rhythm, reflection, and remembrance. TAFA’s work has been widely exhibited and collected by galleries, educationalinstitutions, and cultural organizations worldwide. His paintings are held in permanentpublic and private collections including the Superior Court of Washington, D.C.;Barclays Bank; Sparrow Hospital, Michigan; Shell Company; Ghana’s NationalMuseum; and Carver Federal Bank, as well as notable private collections such as thoseof former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, Bryant Gumbel, and the late JohnnyCochran. He earned his BFA from the College of Art at Kwame Nkrumah University ofScience and Technology in Ghana and currently lives and works in Harlem, New York.
