About the Artist: Todd was born in Wilmington, North Carolina. From an early age it was apparent that art would always be an important part of his life. At eight years old he started private art classes. There he built the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of art. After high school, he went to Savannah College of Art & Design, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA in Sequential Art and a minor in Art History. Todd moved back to Wilmington, doing freelance illustration work while working at a frame shop. Whether working in pastel, charcoal, oil, acrylic, ink, metal or any medium, Todd always tries to create art that is dynamic and engaging. “Light is very important to me. It creates mood and atmosphere.” Mixing light effects with expressive lines or shapes makes for dramatic pieces. Then balancing that with design and color, he tries to make works that come across as exciting, “I’d rather people have a negative reaction to my art than no reaction at all.” The techniques of the impressionists and expressionists are incorporated in his work. He also admires the conceptual artists of the twentieth century, trying to find that marriage between traditional and modern art. Never satisfied, Todd is always searching for new ways to push himself artistically. Want to see more of Todd Carignan’s work, and others? Visit our Instagram!
