Born in 1970, Thomas Kegler is a self-taught contemporary realist painter and art educator who captures the grandeur of American landscapes through traditional oil painting techniques. Drawing inspiration from the Hudson River School tradition and Tonalist movement, he transforms scenes from Western New York, the Catskills, and the mountains of Alaska and Oregon into contemplative works that celebrate nature's subtle transitions. His artistic approach combines meticulous field studies with studio refinement, often incorporating up to twenty layers of paint to achieve atmospheric depth. After working as a graphic designer and Alaskan fishing guide, Kegler dedicated himself to mastering classical painting methods through intensive self-study and participation in the Hudson River Fellowship. He produces instructional art films, teaches workshops nationwide, and serves as a Senior Fellow of the Hudson River Fellowship. His work has earned recognition from the Art Renewal Center as a Living Master and is featured in distinguished collections and exhibitions globally.Artist StatementPoetry of PlaceI paint traditionally - mirroring a time when academic training and processes were embraced and nurtured. Through my work, I strive to bring an awareness and respect for God’s creations and their temporal qualities. My paintings are a “devotional” of hand, head and heart. Experiences of the sublime are what I am called to paint… the materials, technique and subject are the vehicle. The many hours and days spent interacting with my subjects have opened my eyes to subtleties such as intricate color and value shifts, and beauty in the overlooked. The sounds, smells, and tactile qualities that I experience while in the field cannot help but be infused in the work. I strive to impart a universal quality in my paintings that makes the viewer feel he has been there and can relate to the image.
