For over 25 years, Thomas Swanston has lived and worked in South Fulton County, drawing deep inspiration from its rich history, landscapes, and seasonal rhythms. His surroundings, particularly the twice-yearly migration of sandhill cranes overhead, have shaped much of his creative practice. These experiences feed into his work, which explores the twilight between observation and imagination—capturing moments where the visual and spiritual worlds coalesce. Swanston’s art is an omnivorous exploration of meaning, merging diverse elements such as nature, art history, materials, and even the paradoxical humor of shapes. With an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to color, he brings together old and new technologies and a deep reverence for the spirituality of the natural world. His work is ultimately about paying close attention to simple things, weaving them into complex, conceptual pieces. In his current body of work, Swanston focuses on the theme of migration.
