Tom and Jean Heffernan’s art is born from a transformative journey. In 2006, the couple left behind successful urban careers, sold nearly all their possessions, and moved to a remote village in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands—population 30. For months, they lived in near solitude, separated from the mainland by miles of frigid water. In that vast quiet, they began what they call their “sorbet course”—a cleansing of the past and an opening to new creative purpose. Out of that experience emerged a body of work that celebrates people, light, and color. Using metals, paints, and mirrors, Tom and Jean create luminous compositions that reflect both inner and outer worlds—art that invites reflection in more ways than one. Their pieces embody joy, curiosity, and human connection, transforming raw materials into radiant expressions of optimism and shared spirit.
