Tom Melhuse studied painting at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Eau Claire, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong dedication to the arts. For 18 years, he worked as a potter, creating everything from traditional dinnerware to intricate puzzle pots and handcrafted sporting trophies. The son of a naval officer, Tom lived in many places across the United States—including Virginia, Florida, Minnesota, California, Colorado, and Montana—before settling in Oregon. His years in Montana were transformative, inspiring a deep appreciation for the natural world and leading him to focus exclusively on landscape painting. A passionate skier, instructor, and coach, Tom spent countless hours outdoors, observing the shifting light and forms of the landscape firsthand. “Although my university studies were extremely beneficial,” he reflects, “experience, the act of doing, looking, and studying the works of past and contemporary masters have been my greatest teachers.” Today, his paintings reflect a lifetime spent immersed in the land—expressing both its grandeur and its quiet subtleties through a keen eye and reverent hand.
