Walt Mendenhall graduated from Oregon State University in 1968 and went on to serve as an instructor pilot in the U.S. Air Force. After completing his service, he returned to his family farm in Willamina, Oregon, where he has been creating metal sculpture for over 25 years. A self-taught sculptor, Walt draws inspiration from the forests, farmland, and rugged natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. An avid hiker, he often explores the Cascade Range, whose snow-capped peaks are frequent subjects in his series of mountain-inspired sculptures. Working primarily in steel, bronze, copper, and stainless steel, Walt seeks to interpret the natural patterns that surround us through form, color, and texture. The interplay between polished stainless steel and the warm tones of bronze gives his fountains, garden sculptures, and interior works their distinctive balance of strength and grace. Known for the remarkable detail and vitality he brings to his sculptures, Walt has exhibited throughout the Western United States and Florida. His works are held in private and public collections across the U.S., Canada, and overseas.
