The obsession of repetition lies at the root of Robushi’s work. Created with hand cut paper, the images appear simple in the execution, yet are visually complex. Working in a circular and repetitive manner, the creation of the piece becomes a visual mantra. Simple, yet labor intensive, the images are created using printed words, symbols, colors, and patterns. Combining manual labor and digital technology, words and symbols are printed onto acid free paper and hand cut into strips. Each paper strip is glued by hand onto the panels to create the images of concentric circles. Intricate patterns are often created with individually hand painted dots. The simplicity of the imagery belies the complexity and laborious nature of the process involved in creating each piece. When the image is complete, the entire piece is coated by brush with acrylic medium to protect the paper from the elements. Wendy Robushi’s work is included in many private and public collections, including Stanford Medical Center, Paypal, Convene SF, and was most recently shown in the deYoung Museum Open Exhibition 2023, San Francisco.
